Best Impact Driver Bit Sets

An impact driver is only as good as the bit in its collet. Cheap bits twist, round off and snap within days. A proper impact-rated set lasts far longer and strips far fewer screws.

Short answer

The best impact driver bit set for most people is the DeWalt FlexTorq 40-piece (DWA2T40IR): torsion-zone bits, a sensible spread of Phillips, square and Torx, plus nut drivers and a socket adapter in a clear ToughCase+. Milwaukee users who want volume should look at the 100-piece Shockwave PACKOUT set (48-32-4082). The Makita Impact XPS 45-piece is a solid value pick, and Wera's Impaktor set suits metric and European fasteners.

What makes a good impact bit set

Torsion design

Impact-rated bits survive by flexing, not by being harder. Most use a narrowed torsion zone between the tip and the shank. It twists slightly with each blow and spreads the peak load, so the tip does not chip. DeWalt says its FlexTorq zone can flex up to 15 degrees. A bit that is simply hard and thick lasts less long in an impact driver. Our guide to impact-rated vs regular bits explains the metallurgy.

Steel and tip finish

Manufacturers use proprietary tool steels and heat treatment, and none publish comparable hardness data. What you can judge is the tip: precision-machined tips fit the recess more closely and cam out less. Black oxide or similar coatings help against corrosion in a damp toolbox.

Drive coverage

In the US you need Phillips (#1, #2, #3), square or Robertson (#1, #2, #3) and Torx-style star (T15, T20, T25, T30 at minimum). Deck screws commonly use T25; construction screws vary. European and flat-pack fasteners often use Pozidriv, which looks like Phillips but is not interchangeable. See Phillips vs square vs Torx for which drive suits which job, and the impact driver bit sizes chart for a full size list.

Extras worth having

A magnetic bit holder, a couple of nut drivers (1/4 and 5/16 inch cover most hex-head screws) and a 1/4-inch socket adapter. A magnetic sleeve or screw-lock holder keeps screws on the bit overhead. See magnetic bit holders.

Case

A case with a clear lid and bits you can pull out with one hand saves more time than you expect. Labeled slots help too: when every bit has a marked home, you notice at a glance which sizes are missing or worn. Look for a latch that holds when the case is dropped, and a size that fits your bag or modular storage.

According to DeWalt's listing, the set includes 25 one-inch bits, nine 2-1/4-inch bits and one 3-1/2-inch bit, plus a magnetic bit tip holder, a magnetic sleeve, two nut drivers and a socket adapter. The torsion zone is DeWalt's FlexTorq design. The clear lid and bit-bar layout make it quick to find the right bit, and the ToughCase+ links with DeWalt's other cases.

Strengths

  • Good balance of insert and power bits
  • Useful extras included
  • Sturdy, easy-to-read case

Weaknesses

  • Only one or two of the less common sizes
  • You will still need extra #2 and T25 bits for big jobs
  • Contents vary slightly between listings, so check the current one

Best for: homeowners who want a full set without paying for 100 pieces.

Pieces
45
Includes
Insert bits, 2-in power bits, holder, 2 nutsetters, socket adapter

Makita's Impact XPS set covers the common drives and adds two magnetic nutsetters, an insert bit holder and a 1/4-inch socket adapter. Retailers disagree slightly on the exact split between 1-inch insert bits and 2-inch power bits, so check the current listing if you need a specific mix.

Strengths

  • Good coverage for the size
  • Useful nutsetters and adapter
  • Works in any 1/4-inch hex impact driver

Weaknesses

  • Published contents vary between retailers
  • Fewer long power bits than construction users want
  • Case is functional rather than premium

Power bits

Bosch sells Impact Tough bits in a range of set sizes, many with 2-inch and longer power bits and a magnetic nutsetter. Bosch's line is a good choice for refill packs of single sizes too. Contents differ widely by set, so pick by the bits you actually need and confirm the piece list.

Strengths

  • Good selection of long power bits
  • Widely available single-size refills

Weaknesses

  • Many set variants make comparison confusing
  • Some sets include drill bits you may not need

Sets, power bits or single-size packs?

A big set is not always the best impact bit set for you. Most people use a handful of sizes constantly and the rest a few times a year. Think about how you work before you buy.

FormatGood forDrawback
1-inch insert bitsCheap replacement, compact storage, general work in a holderMore wobble; holder adds length
2-inch power bitsDeck and construction screws, straighter drivingCost more each; bulkier
3-inch and longer power bitsReaching into recesses and between framingMore wobble on small screws
Single-size bulk packsReplacing the sizes you wear outNo coverage of other sizes
Mixed setsA first kit, covering the unexpectedMany sizes you will rarely use

The sensible approach for most people: buy one good mixed set for coverage, then buy bulk packs of your top two or three sizes. For general DIY that is usually Phillips #2 and T25. Electricians often add square #2. Keep the spares in the same case so a worn bit is replaced on the spot rather than used until it strips a screw.

Brand loyalty matters less here than with tools. Every set on this page fits any 1/4-inch hex impact driver, so you can mix a DeWalt case with Bosch refills or Wera bits without any issue.

Make your bits last

  • Match the bit to the recess. A PH2 in a PH3 screw cams out and rounds both. If in doubt, try the size that seats deepest without wobble.
  • Push straight and firm. Most cam-out is from angle or too little pressure, not the bit. Our guide to stopping stripped screws covers technique.
  • Use lower speed on small screws. Full power on a #6 screw is how tips chip.
  • Retire bits early. A rounded bit costs more in stripped screws than a new bit.
  • Keep drill bits separate. For holes, use hex-shank impact-rated drill bits. See drill bits for impact drivers.

Safety: Bits can shatter, even impact-rated ones. Wear eye protection whenever you use an impact driver.

How we chose and our verdict

We compared manufacturer descriptions and published contents, drive coverage for US fasteners, torsion design, case quality and owner feedback on bit life and breakage. We did not run our own durability tests, and no brand publishes comparable bit-life data. For background on how bits fit and wear, see our impact driver bits guide.

Verdict

Buy the DeWalt FlexTorq 40-piece if you want one set that covers almost everything. Go for Milwaukee's 100-piece Shockwave PACKOUT set if you burn through bits on the job, Makita's Impact XPS set for value, Bosch power bits for long screws and Wera's Impaktor set for metric and Pozidriv work. Then buy extra packs of the two or three sizes you use most.

Frequently asked questions

Do I really need impact-rated bits?

Yes for regular use. Standard bits are hard but brittle, and the hammer blows of an impact driver crack them at the tip or shank. Impact-rated bits use tougher steel and often a torsion zone that flexes slightly to absorb peaks. They cost a little more and last much longer.

Which bits wear out first?

The sizes you use most: usually Phillips #2, square #2 and Torx T25. That is why good sets include several of each. Buy extra packs of those sizes rather than a bigger set full of sizes you rarely touch.

Are 1-inch insert bits or 2-inch power bits better?

Power bits (2 inches and longer) snap straight into the collet and wobble less. Insert bits need a holder but are cheaper to replace. Use power bits for deck and construction screws and inserts in a magnetic holder for general work.

Can I mix bit brands with my impact driver?

Yes. All of these sets use the standard 1/4-inch hex shank, so any brand fits any impact driver. Bit quality varies more by product line than by tool brand.

How do I know when a bit is worn?

When it starts to cam out on screws it used to drive cleanly, or the tip edges look rounded or shiny. Replace it immediately, because a worn bit strips screw heads, and a stripped screw costs far more time than a new bit.
